COOKING IN YOUR RV
Cooking is a big part of camp life, but cooking in an RV can be challenging if you’re used to having more space and better appliances. Luckily for you, we here at Campers RV have collected our favorite tips for cooking in an RV. If you’re looking for a new RV with more kitchen space, stop by our Shreveport, Louisiana dealership. We proudly serve the areas of Bossier City, Monroe, and Ruston, Louisiana, as well as Tyler, Longview, and Marshall, Texas.
Use Helpful Appliances
Bringing along a few appliances can expand your cooking capabilities by quite a bit. A slow cooker will allow you to get dinner started in the morning, go off and have fun doing whatever activities you like, and come back to a hot, fresh meal at the end of the day. Microwaves are helpful more than just reheating your leftovers. Microwaves work great for steaming vegetables or rice, and even making more complicated foods, too, if you’re creative.
Make & Freeze Meals Ahead of Time
Let’s face it: frozen dinners from the grocery store are never as good as advertised. The convenience of having a meal that can be reheated with just one step outweighs the quality of the food. But if you cook your own meals and then freeze them yourself, you can count on having healthy, delicious food that’s also extremely convenient. Try cooking foods like sauces or that are liquid base so they hold up better while frozen.
Clean While You Cook
The kitchen in an RV almost always has limited counter space, especially by comparison to most owners’ home kitchens. If you want to make the most of that counter space, it’s best to clean while you cook. Put ingredients away after you’re done with them, throw away the waste, and most importantly, take a moment to wash each dish after you’re done using it. Not only will you have more open workspace, but you’ll also have less cleanup to do when you’ve finished cooking your meal.
Cook Less
When you don’t have much space and you have limited equipment for making food, why not cut out the cooking step altogether? Instead of making so many dishes that require multiple cooking steps, try eating more salads, sandwiches, and raw dishes. For breakfast and lunch, it’s easy to avoid ever dirtying a pot or pan. Even for dinner, you can avoid cooking if you make some food beforehand. Which leads us to the next step...
Batch Cooking
Batch cooking can make meal preparation much easier! The key to batch cooking is to cook double or triple batches when you’re going to cook something so that you have lots of leftovers which can later be used for other meals. For instance, try cooking an entire pork shoulder so that you have several pounds of pulled pork. This is delicious in pulled pork sandwiches, but it’s also great the next day in pork enchiladas, pozole, or in a ham sandwich.
Use the Grill or Campfire
If you don’t want to worry about dealing with extra pots and pans, simply use the grill or campfire for your cooking. Not only does open flame impart a delicious and unique flavor, but it’s also convenient and easy to clean up after.
