RV Storage in Winter: Location, Portable Items, Pest Prevention
In parts one and two of this multi-part blog series, we've gone over a number of themes and tips for storing your RV during the winter. From major components like the battery or tires to important features like awnings, fridges/freezers and more, there are several areas you'll want to attend to if winter storage is your plan for this season.
At Campers RV Center, we're proud to offer a huge range of RVs for sale, plus expertise on how to store and care for any of our vehicles. In today's final entry in our series, we'll go over a few more considerations to make during winter RV storage.
Storage Location
Another vital area to be thinking about here is precisely where you're going to be storing your vehicle. The ideal format for RV storage is an enclosed one, which will protect the units from rain and snow at all times.
However, it might not always be possible to find a storage location that hits these high marks. If you must store your RV outside during winter, make sure there is proper drainage in place so water doesn't pool up around the vehicle. Also, try to pick out an area where the nearby trees won't drop their leaves on the exterior of your unit.
Portable Heater Protection
If you keep any form of portable heater in your RV for regular use, you're going to want to think about how it will be stored as well. To keep the heater in good working order during winter storage, look into buying some kind of protective cover for this accessory.
This will help shield your heater from precipitation and other outdoor elements so it can stay ready for use on a moment's notice. Simply remove the cover when you need to use the heater, and keep it in place when not in use.
Another consideration to make with your portable heating unit is whether or not it will be stored inside your RV during winter storage. If so, the best option might be to remove this component from its regular location and leave it off altogether for the season.
Portable Generators
Another item type that should be stored in your RV during winter is a portable generator. The reason for this is pretty similar to the idea behind protecting the heater: you want to keep your generator sheltered from rain and snow so it can always function properly.
If there's a chance any moisture might get onto the exterior of your generator, be sure to buy some protective plastic or canvas to shield it from the elements. Or, if you're lucky enough to have an enclosed storage location for your generator (like a garage or shed), just keep it inside this building between uses and you'll be set during the winter.
Pest Prevention
Finally, as you're leaving the RV for the winter, take some steps to close any gaps and lock out any pests that might want to get into your vehicle. Be sure to check around the roof and all windows of the RV, as well as along the lampshades and other small areas where bugs or rodents might sneak through a crack in the floor. Seal up these holes with caulk or scraps of wood for a safe winter storage period.
