How to Level your Travel Trailer Tips from Campers RV CenterEvery travel trailer owner should know how to level their trailer. Sure you can park without it. But why would you? Parking unevenly can affect how well your fridge functions, can disturb loose items inside, and can make walking around inside feel slightly “off”. Of course, nearly anywhere you park will be uneven to some extent. Most people take their trailers out into the wilderness. You are traveling to escape the concrete jungle, which means parking out in the jungle (or, well forest). Dirt plots of land are full of dips, bumps, and slopes. You’ll need to level your trailer if you want to avoid parking at an angle.

Fortunately, it’s easy to learn with our step by step guide below. If you are still in the market for a trailer, check out our stock of travel trailers for sale. At Campers RV Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, we offer new and used trailers for sale. stop by to see our selection.

Picking a Location

Work smarter, not harder, by starting off with a good location. Trying the level process on very uneven ground is going to be harder than on a smoother spot. You may need to drive a bit longer to find the perfect spot. Or the ideal location may be slightly less convenient, but those few extra steps to the bathroom or the lake are worth it for a much easier parking job.

Start the Process

Park your trailer about a foot and a half from where you want it to eventually rest. Your level will be a helpful tool throughout this process. Start by measuring how the trailer sits from side to side (or left to right). You can do this by placing the level on the tongue of the trailer. This will tell you if you need to elevate the left side or ride side.

Once you know how you’ll need to adjust things, put boards or leveling blocks behind the wheels you need to raise. Slowly back the trailer up onto the boards. After you park, double check the level to make sure you added the correct amount of height. This may take a few tries. But you’ll get there!

Keep Things in Place

Now that you are level from side to side, secure it. Otherwise, it could roll and become un-even. Then you’ll have to repeat the process all over again. All you need is wheel chocks, bricks, or boards placed in front and behind each wheel.

Finish the Process

The next step is to level the trailer from front to back. You can use the level again to see what adjustments you’ll need to make. Simply place the level perpendicular to your last placement (so the same way as the length of your travel trailer). Use your hitch jack to adjust it higher or lower. Double check the level after you adjust. The first few times, you’ll probably need to use the hitch jack again. But with time, you’ll get better at eyeballing it and knocking it out on your first attempt.

Securing Your Travel Trailer

Now your trailer is level from front to back and from side to side. The final step is to make sure it stays that way. Here is where your stabilizer jacks come into play. These are for the corners of your trailer. When they are installed correctly, they minimize the rocking motions that make your trailer unlevel. After these are securely in place, you can go about your day knowing your trailer is level and going to stay that way.
